Hamilton Health Sciences named recipient of the 2026 Energy and Environmental Stewardship Award

Published on April 22, 2026

The Canadian College of Health Leaders is proud to announce that Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) was named recipient of the 2026 Energy and Environmental Stewardship Award in recognition of its exceptional, organization‑wide commitment to reducing environmental impact while advancing high‑quality patient care.

As one of Ontario’s largest and most complex health systems, HHS has demonstrated that sustainability and clinical excellence can, and must, go hand in hand. Since 2016, the organization has achieved remarkable, measurable progress: nearly 475 million ekWh in energy savings, more than 1,200 megalitres of water conserved, an Energy Use Index improvement of 16 ekWh per square foot, and an impressive 41% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions. These achievements are supported by disciplined governance, transparent reporting, and a long‑term roadmap toward net‑zero emissions by 2050. A standout initiative is HHS’s $57‑million cogeneration system upgrade, which has reduced annual CO₂ emissions by more than 28,000 tonnes while generating millions in savings that are reinvested into infrastructure renewal, patient comfort, and system reliability.

Equally compelling is the culture of environmental stewardship that has taken root across the organization. Clinicians, staff, and leaders have championed initiatives that reduce waste, preserve natural resources, and embed sustainability into everyday practice, from an 87% reduction in desflurane use, to narcotic waste denaturing that protects waterways, to expanded medical device reprocessing and community‑focused programs such as food donation and therapeutic healing spaces. These efforts reflect a shared belief that environmental responsibility is a matter of health equity and a core dimension of quality care. With its sustained results, innovative practices, and deep organizational commitment, Hamilton Health Sciences exemplifies the spirit of this award and stands as a national leader in building a healthier, more sustainable future for the communities it serves.

The award is sponsored by Trane Canada. Trane, the world leader in creating and sustaining safe, comfortable and energy efficient environments – improves the performance of buildings around the world. Trane solutions optimize indoor environments with a broad portfolio of energy efficient heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, building and contracting services, parts support and advanced controls for commercial buildings.

This award is part of our CCHL National Awards Program and will be presented at the Honouring Health Leadership event on June 14, 2026.
