Melanie Stack, CHE, Reflects on Building Leadership Capacity Through Compassion and Resilience
Melanie Stack, RN, BSN, MHA, CHE, has built a career defined by resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to leadership in healthcare. With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Victoria and a Master of Health Administration from the University of British Columbia, Melanie has combined frontline experience with system-level leadership to advance organizational development and promote compassionate care.
Melanie began her career as a Registered Nurse in 2008, working in emergency care. A personal health challenge early in her career prompted a period of reflection, ultimately leading her to transition from bedside nursing into leadership and administrative roles. This shift deepened her interest in healthcare systems, staff well-being, and the structures that support quality care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Melanie stepped into a Director-level role overseeing immunization clinics: an experience that tested her adaptability and reinforced her passion for leading teams in high-pressure environments. She credits this period as both one of the most challenging and rewarding phases of her career, where she witnessed the collective resilience of healthcare professionals and communities.
Currently serving as Manager, Leadership and Organizational Development at Island Health, Melanie works across the organization to support leadership development, team effectiveness, and initiatives that strengthen engagement and recognition in organizational culture. Her work is rooted in the belief that leadership at every level plays a critical role in shaping psychologically safe, inclusive workplaces.
Among her many achievements, Melanie highlights her work in mentoring and coaching others as her most meaningful accomplishment. She describes the growth and success of colleagues and emerging leaders as the true legacy of leadership: impact that extends far beyond individual roles or projects. A proud member of CCHL since 2015, Melanie has served on the Vancouver Island Chapter executive since 2019 in the roles of Secretary, Vice Chair, and Chair. She is currently completing her Certified LEADS Specialist training, reflecting her ongoing commitment to leadership excellence through the LEADS in a Caring Environment framework. For Melanie, involvement in the College has been an invaluable source of professional growth, networking, and community.
Melanie Stack was selected by the Vancouver Island Chapter as the recipient of the 2025 Chapter Award for Distinguished Service in recognition of her commitment to advancing leadership excellence and supporting her peers. For her, the award symbolizes the power of connection, mentorship, and shared learning within the College community.
